The Circular Economy

Circular Economy Graphic

There is a sustainability concept, which I have been familiar with for some time, but its name has been re-termed, and I think it makes the idea simpler to understand. It is called the circular economy, also known as the cradle to grave concept or the product life cycle approach.

A circular economy keeps resources in use for as long as possible, extracts the maximum value from them while they are in use, then recovers and regenerates products and materials at the end of their service life instead of disposing of them. The competition for scarce resources and their mass production is a cause for adopting sustainable development practices. Determining the best solution for end-of-life products is a problem faced by companies and a good reason to adopt a greener approach to supply chain management. Environmental impact, quality, legislative requirements, and cost are all important considerations when choosing the best option, which includes:

  1. Reuse
  2. Repair
  3. Re-manufacture
  4. Recycle
  5. Disposal

Disposal should always be the last possible resort.
